Human Capital Lab, ConAgra Foods Recognized with Business Impact Award

October 22, 2010 - Bellevue University's Human Capital Lab,SM in conjunction with its strategic partner Capital Analytics, Inc., conducted a measurement study for ConAgra Foods' leadership development program that received the gold award for Business Impact in this year's Learning in Practice awards announced at the annual Chief Learning Officer Symposium.

The business impact study measured the impact and effectiveness of ConAgra Foods' "Foundations of Leadership" program on immediate business results and the ability to build a leadership pipeline. By isolating the business impact, the research found ConAgra Foods' leadership program provided a 276 percent return on investment in the first year.

Not only did the measurement study reveal a positive return on investment, ConAgra Foods saw improved plant and individual performance metrics, a positive impact on supervisor turnover and retention, increased productivity, and improved plant safety.

"The unique business value of the work being done by the Human Capital Lab is the ability to measure investments in human capital in quantitative terms not typically available in human capital initiatives such as learning, and development programs," said Michael E. Echols, Ph.D., executive vice president, Strategic Initiatives and the Human Capital Lab, Bellevue University.

"As a result of this study ConAgra Foods has seen that not only are trained supervisors more likely to be promoted, they are more likely to stay with the organization and drive meaningful performance improvement within their work units. Hard data like this is invaluable to organizations," continued Echols.

In conjunction with Capital Analytics, Inc., an independent measurement consultancy, the Human Capital Lab has conducted business impact studies for leading companies, including Chrysler, Sun Microsystems, U.S. Bank, Mutual of Omaha, and others to further develop knowledge about how human capital initiatives impact business outcomes.

"We're extremely pleased with the study results which have reinforced the value of our investments in people. With the results, we've fine-tuned the 'Foundations of Leadership' program which has generated additional positive conversations with executives about furthering human capital investments," said John Hine, senior director, Organization Development, ConAgra Foods.
